You get home at 6pm after a hectic day at work – traffic was horrible, you’re exhausted, but the kids need dinner. You definitely don’t have the energy to spend 2 hours on your feet cooking dinner, and even though you really want to, you know you can’t give them pizza again for dinner.

So, what now?

Moms share their go-to dinner recipes that’s super quick and easy to make:

Hotdogs

Just buy rolls on your way home and Viennas. Or you can braai boerewors when you get home. But usually kids prefer their hotdogs with a Vienna and some tomato sauce.

Hamburgers

If you have a gas braai, you can just grill the patties on there quickly (saves time on washing a pan and cleaning the oil splatter on the oven). You can also place them in the oven under the grill. Next you just need fresh rolls, tomato, cheese, onion and whatever else your family enjoys on their burgers. You can serve oven baked chips (get them from Spar, Checkers, Pick n Pay) with the burgers.

Wraps

You can literally put anything in a wrap. If you have leftovers from the night before, use that. Otherwise just cut chicken breasts into strips, fry them in the pan quickly with some mushrooms and tomatoes and onion, roll it in a wrap with a bit of cheese and voila – dinner is ready.

Spaghetti Bolognaise

If you don’t have a go-to recipe, simply buy a packet of Royco Cook in Bolognaise sauce. You just add tomatoes and onion and the mince and let it simmer for 20 minutes. Spaghetti should also be ready after 20 minutes.

Chicken steaklets or schnitzel with chips or mash

You get those chicken steaklets in the frozen food section at Pick n Pay, Spar or Checkers. They have plain ones, or there are ones with different flavoured fillings. Just pop them in the oven for 25 minutes and dinner is ready.

Pork bangers and mash

The only thing that will take some time here is cooking the potatoes. But if you get home really late and there’s no time to cook the potatoes, put them in a Checkers bag in the microwave (wet the potatoes and make holes in them with a fork) until they are soft and ready to be mashed.

Steak and salad

Your partner can fire up the gas braai or grill the steaks in the pan while you get the salad ready.

Curry Mince with Roti’s

Quick, easy and delicious! Remember to get Roti’s on your way home. You can also buy them in bulk and stick them in the freezer. The same with the curry mince – make a big batch on the weekend and freeze for those nights when you really don’t have time to make dinner.

Roast chicken from Woolies or Checkers with veggies and potatoes

A roasted chicken costs about the same as a raw one, it will just save you some time if it’s already cooked.

Fish and chips

The kids might prefer fishfingers, but for yourself and your partner a piece of grilled hake with salad or chips is quick and easy to make – and healthy.

Lasagne (make this on the weekend and freeze)

A lasagne does take some time if you are making it from scratch – especially if you have to cook the mince and make the white sauce. But if you make a big one, there might be leftovers for tomorrow.

Macaroni and cheese

Curry mince and vetkoek or rice

If you don’t have a go-to curry mince recipe, just buy a cook in sauce from the shop, and a packet of ready-made dough for the vetkoek (ask the bakery section if they have) if you don’t have time to make your own dough.
