Spring is in the air and people around South Africa are celebrating with a delicious braai or three. If you’re looking to hone your skills or discover some new recipes to try, the newly released Weber cookbooks by Jamie Purviance are a great choice.
South Africans love the flavours of the Mediterranean: olive oil, lemons, herbs, vine-ripened tomatoes, fragrant spices, fresh seafood and succulent grilled meats. In Weber Mediterranean, master griller Jamie Purviance explores the cuisine of the region, with simple recipes that take the guesswork out of braaiing. The short introduction includes a how-to guide for flat breads and kebabs, as well as what equipment you need for efficient braaiing.
There is a large selection of over 70 Mediterranean recipes that extend beyond meat and fish to delicious side dishes, salads and desserts. Some of my favourites are ‘Homemade Pork Sausages’, ‘Catalan Fish Stew’ and ‘Pear & Chocolate Pizzas’.
Weber Hot & Spicy
A companion to Weber Mediterranean, this cookbook is all about chillies and spices. There is enough variety, with over 65 recipes, to also make it suitable for people who don’t enjoy hot food. Instead, they can focus on those recipes that are made all the more delicious with the inclusion of fragrant spices. Handy tips provide advice where it is needed, and the short introduction covers how to prepare chillies, and where different chillies rank on the ‘heat scale’.
