I do not have an appreciation for winter and, as life and the universe would have it, the proverbial last push is the part where I completely lose my patience for the innocuous side effects of a South African winter.

I had been so proud of myself at the beginning of winter

Boyfriend arrived home with a fancy new gas heater. I had spent a small fortune on hydrating body creams (and cuticle oils) and I had the BEST intentions of beating winter at her own game. Onwards and upwards!

But here I am, in my car, bleating about bad hair, dry skin and cuticles. Privileged problems, right?

Change, even when it is a positive change that you are looking forward to, is never easy. Poets, songwriters and thinkers through the ages have waxed lyrical about change …

A change is as good as a holiday

Embrace it! With the best intentions, we face our fears, we prepare for change and we do everything in our power to remain positive and upbeat… and then, the ‘last push’. The space just before the next great thing that you have waited or worked for. You’re as close as dammit is to a swear word… and you lose it.

We’ve all been there.

Perhaps, there is something to be said for that ‘last push’; releasing frustrations and emotions that are as old as a piece of gum you’ve been chewing on for far too long. No more flavour. Out with the old, to make space for the new. In the words of Elsa, ”let it go!”

Maybe, it really IS that easy

Just let it go. Make space for the new – whatever it may bring. Trust yourself that the next phase, will be met with all the skills and tools you have learned to use.

So, as we look forward to the change of season, the afternoon thunderstorms, braaing on the weekend and gel toenails, let’s take a look at this list of tools to manage change:

  • Expect it: Most things are not perennial: expect change and expect great things to happen! Every season has a reason and thank goodness, seasons change!
  • Work with it, when it doesn’t work with you: Ultimately, barring death and those types of finalities in life, everything that happens and changes is powerless without our response. You have the power to turn any negative into a positive.
  • Embrace it: You’ve come this far, haven’t you? Trust yourself! You have what it takes, to get through the next phase
  • Be good to YOU: All that great advice, love, support and kindness that you give to your family, friends and colleagues… give some to yourself too!
  • Be open to the unexpected good stuff: Summer is coming and that’s a great thing! So, when change brings you something to celebrate – grab it with both hands and be present in that moment of joy!
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff – celebrate it … it really works. This ‘being grateful for small things’ idea. Be grateful, every day, for all the small blessings that often go unnoticed and un-thanked.
