What’s THE Diet for YOU?
‘Banting’ is arguably the most popular diet in South Africa right now. Although it appears that it was created a couple of years ago by Tim Noakes, it actually originated in the nineteenth century and is one of the first recorded ‘weight-loss plans’.
The basic premise of Banting is that the traditional Western weight-loss idea of ‘low fat, high carb’ is wrong and unhealthy and that instead we should eat ‘high fat, low carb’.
(One of the reasons promoters of this diet cite for the ‘misinformation’ we have been sold regarding fats vs. carbs is that the food industry in the USA needed to be stimulated and this was the best way to do it. Interestingly, this turnaround in ideology serves to stimulate a different part of the food industry pretty well too.)
Banting requires a diet rich in saturated fats and animal products (read butter, cream, eggs, meat, fish, nuts) and low in carbohydrates (read sugar, wheat and flours, fruits, potatoes).
A typical HEALTHY banting day might look as follows:
- Breakfast: eggs and bacon, coffee with cream (or butter to make a ‘bulletproof’ coffee)
- Lunch: chicken breast salad
- Dinner: steak and vegetables
Banting has been a very good weight-loss diet for some, but not everyone who does this diet loses weight.
It works best for people who are good at exercising portion control and self-discipline as there are many banting-friendly ‘junk-foods’ like cakes, etc., available which can seriously derail your calorie-total for the day. You also need to deal well with a low-carb diet.
I have found many people feel too tired and grumpy on this type of eating plan.
If this all looks good to you, try it. Just remember that to give a diet a fair chance you need to do it for at least eight weeks.
