The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is one of South Africa’s most popular holiday destinations …

In fact, it was voted the “most value for money, family friendly destination in South Africa” by SafariNow in November 2015. It has almost 120 km of beaches for swimming, surfing, diving and fishing. The beaches are in close proximity to nature reserves, stunning golf courses and tons of adventure and recreational activities.

Margate is one of the most popular towns on this coast and lies on the southernmost stretch of the South Coast – also called The Hibiscus Coast. It is so named for the thousands of beautiful hibiscus flowers that bloom along this part of the coast.

Margate is a vibrant colourful town with its own airport. It boasts a beautiful Blue Flag beach with great waves for swimmers and surfers. Lifeguards keep guard over the swimmers and there is a flea market and an Olympic-sized pool adjacent to it. Just south of the beach is the Margate Fishing Pier, a busy pier popular with fishermen especially during the annual Sardine Run, when shad and sardines are caught in abundance.

Self-catering holiday apartments

Most of the accommodation in Margate consists of self-catering holiday apartments. Self-catering facilities are a huge benefit when travelling with kids, who want to eat all day long and at odd hours. They are also easier on the pocket as opposed to staying at a hotel and eating all meals at restaurants. We stayed at Kridzil Holiday Flats, which is managed by Vacation Recreational Services (Pty) Ltd (VRS), who also manage Mount Amanzi and Crystal Springs.

Kridzil Holiday Flats is well-located, just 300 metres from the main Margate beach and within easy walking distance of the Margate CBD.

It has a swimming pool for residents, a play area for little kids and a games room for bigger kids. My son spotted it immediately and we had a hard time dragging him out of there. Board games are available at reception.

Our six-sleeper unit consisted of two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds for the kids. It also had an open-plan lounge with a sleeper couch, and satellite television. The selection of channels included various M-Net and SuperSport channels and Disney Junior, which the kids were happy about.

We had a fully-equipped kitchenette with the requisite appliances, and crockery and cutlery for six people, a dining area, a balcony with a table and chairs, and a braai facility. We could see the sea and the beach from our balcony and enjoyed just relaxing there and enjoying the view.

Affiliated to RCI

As Kridzil is affiliated to RCI, it can be booked by RCI members through them. Non-RCI members can also benefit from great timeshare or rental deals, especially during off-peak season. Apartments are serviced daily except on Sundays and public holidays. A laundry service is also provided and secure parking is available.

We were well-positioned to enjoy the South Coast. After picking up brochures from Kridzil’s reception area we took a drive to a coffee estate near the Wild Coast one day. We also visited the Uvongo Flea Market. The rest of the time, we spent at the beautiful Margate beach.
