Chiropractic manipulations have great benefits for both pregnant women and the babies they are carrying. Read why…..

When you hear the word â??chiropracticâ?, what is your first impression?

You might exclaim, â??Chiro – what?â? Or turn to your friend and say that a chiropractor is one of those people who click your back.

In essence, chiropractic is the use of manual therapy techniques like manipulation, massage and muscle relaxation therapy, neural (nerve) release techniques and others to restore a normal biomechanical and functional neural response to the bodyâ??s musculo-skeletal structures.

In South Africa, chiropractors study for six years and thereafter qualify with a masters degree. Subjects covered range from anatomy and physiology to diagnostics and systemic pathology, focusing on the musculo-skeletal system and related conditions.

This detailed but broad-based education teaches us to look beyond the realm of bones, joints and muscles for the source of a condition and thus gives us the skills to work with other health professionals in treating patients.

Is chiropractic treatment safe during pregnancy?

A common question I am approached with as a chiropractor is whether chiropractic treatment and more specifically spinal manipulation is safe during pregnancy. The answer is a resounding yes.

In fact, not only is it safe but, it can be greatly beneficial in helping mothers prepare for the labour process. We commonly treat pregnant women who struggle with low back and pubic bone pain. Chiropractic treatment helps to improve the comfort of the mother and passage of the baby during childbirth.

Why do I get back pain when Iâ??m pregnant?

Many people have a pre-existing problem with their backs that may give no apparent discomfort, or is easily ignored. With the physiological response of the body to falling pregnant, and the rapid growth of the baby, the joints and muscles are put under an excessive load and any biomechanical deficiency will be felt.

How does this affect my baby?

The uterus is held in place by ligaments that attach to the pelvis. When there is an imbalance in the pelvis, these ligaments twist and cause a constraint of the uterus. This restricts your babyâ??s own comfort and skeletal development and can result in conditions such as torticollis (stiff neck), a treatable, non-permanent condition that can be prevented.

Chiropractic manipulation can mean a quicker, safer birth

A difficult or prolonged birth can result in the incorrect positioning of your baby in the uterus and subsequently in the birth canal. Even if the babyâ??s position is only slightly off, it might force doctors to make use of invasive and often traumatic medical interventions such as vacuum extractions, use of forceps or even c-sections for the birth of the baby.

Doctors of chiropractic work specifically with your pelvis throughout pregnancy, restoring a state of balance and creating an environment for an easier, safer delivery. By restoring neural function to the uterus it is allowed to operate at optimum level.

So why wait? Enjoy the benefits of chiropractic as part of your pre-natal care for a safer, happier pregnancy.
