On the morning of March 17, Vusi Ndlovu went as usual to say hello to his good friend and businessman, Fakrudeen Muthalib, known as the ‘meat king’ of Benoni …

Muthalib’s last words to Ndlovu were a request that he stop in at the butchery before going home that afternoon, because Muthalib wanted to give him something.

“Now I will never know what it was, because I never had a chance to see him after work. I am still in shock that he is no longer with us,” Ndlovu said.

While making his way to the meeting later that afternoon, he saw the butchery surrounded by police cars and ambulances.

Three men had shot Muthalib at his business, on the corner of Russel and Howard Street

“I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to a good friend and one reliable man.”

Ndlovu, the manager of Eat@ the Bistro, said his friend was one of their main suppliers. People in the area were living in fear after the shooting.

He said they had no idea what the motive for the murder could have been.

Customer also shot

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nomsa Sekele said on Tuesday that Muthalib was shot in the upper body and died on the scene.

A female customer was also shot, apparently in the head, and was taken to the nearby Glynwood hospital.

Sekele said nothing was stolen. Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened.

She could not provide information on whether any arrests had been made or the motive for the murder.

A worker at the local Greenville laundry, Thopi Biyani, said residents would miss him

“A lot of Indian people used to get their meat from the butcher. I think they are going to miss him the most,” Biyani said.

Benoni City Times reported that Heather Bender, a regular customer, placed flowers outside the butchery as a sign of respect.

According to the paper, Muthalib’s business partner, Ra-ees Ebrahim said the butchery would remain closed for the time being.
