Sugar is toxic…
Sugar… you can’t say the S-word at a braai without someone saying something like “If they had discovered sugar when they discovered cocaine, sugar would be illegal“, “Sugar is poison to your body”, or “Sugar is the reason people are fat. If we could all just stop eating sugar we would look like fitness models. Here, have another sugar-free muffin”.
- Now, I’m not going to try to convince you that sugar is good for you.
- I’m not going to tell you that eating lots of sugar is OK.
- I’m not going to tell you that sugar DOESN’T make you fatter.
But I am going to tell you that sugar is not poisonous, a drug, or the sole reason you’re overweight.
Let’s tackle these one at a time:
1. What is sugar (the type everyone says is bad)?
Well, it’s really just a substance extracted from certain plants. The most common ‘bad’ sugar is sucrose – fructose and glucose stuck together.
The most common ‘bad’ sugar is sucrose – fructose and glucose stuck together.
So the first LOGICAL question is: ‘But if it comes from plants then can it really be THAT bad?’ And the answer is ‘No, surely not.’
Your body knows what to do with sugar. It’s a simple carbohydrate that your body uses for energy. TOXIC substances are things the body doesn’t understand, like many medicines and drugs, chemicals in refined foods, heated fats and so on.
TOXINS don’t get used by the body so they are shuttled into fat cells to protect you from having poisons floating around your system.
Sugar is NOT TOXIC. It’s a simple molecule and your body knows how to use it.
Next week, I’ll talk about part 2 – ‘Sugar is a drug worse than cocaine’.
