When baking a recipe that has a pie crust, substitute half the liquid needed with the same amount of gin. This will make the pastry flakier and really delicious. The alcohol evaporates at a lower temperature than other liquids.
If anyone you know suffers badly from arthritis – soak a bowl of sultanas in gin. Leave them stewing in the alcohol for a week. Prescribe ten of the boozy little tidbits a day to the sufferer. The juniper berries in the gin have anti-inflammatory properties which, combined with the grapes and sulphur dioxide, can give considerable relief.
Fill a spray bottle with gin and a few drops of your favourite essential oil. The alcohol in the gin quickly evaporates leaving the fresh smell of juniper and lavender or rose or whatever. This is an easy and effective air freshener.
For a severe sinus condition try this: Add one tablespoon runny honey to two tablespoons whisky. Squeeze in the juice of a quarter of a lemon and add mix to one cup very hot water. Sip slowly and inhale the steam at the same time. Do this only once a night.
Whisky is soothing for toothache. Either dab each side of the affected tooth with neat whisky, or use it as a mouthwash.
Any spirit alcohol can be used in an emergency to clean an affected area that has a cut or deep graze.
