Idols – a firm fixture on the South African television calendar for the last 13 years – has witnessed many highs, lows and major controversies when it comes to selecting a winner

As the following gallery will reveal, success has not come easy to many of the past winners, with many  disappearing into relative obscurity whilst others have worked harder to make a mark in the music industry.

Heinz was the first winner of SA Idols and went on to do quite well for himself; landing big roles both locally and internationally.

He was able to launch an acting career thanks to his widespread success and this year he made headlines when he announced that he will be crowd funding his next album.
