Reeva was shot dead by her boyfriend, Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, at his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day in 2013. The track star claimed to have mistaken her for an intruder.

Reeva would have celebrated her 32nd birthday today, Wednesday 19 August.

Her parents, Barry and June Steenkamp, recently told You Magazine that they would go to Summerstrand beach in Port Elizabeth in the morning to pay tribute to their law-graduate daughter.

Barry and June said they were going to throw red roses into the ocean, and hoped to get a glimpse of the dolphins their daughter loved so much.

“We would rather spend our time thinking about her than Oscar,” June, who declined any other media interviews, told You Magazine.

A bright future

Born on August 19, 1983, Steenkamp appeared to have a bright future ahead of her before her death. A glimpse at her social network profiles sketch a picture of a happy, ambitious woman.

On both her Instagram and Twitter profiles, Steenkamp described herself as an ‘SA Model, Cover Girl, Tropika Island of Treasure Celeb Contestant, Law Graduate, Child of God.’

Steenkamp’s portrayal on social media of a beautiful, happy life came to an abrupt end early on that February 2013 morning, when four gunshots were fired through the toilet door.

Her last Instagram post was that of a woman screaming out while a man’s hand is seen trying to cover her mouth.

“I woke up in a happy safe home this morning. Not everyone did. Speak out against the rape of individuals in SA. RIP Anene Booysen.#rape #crime #sayNO,” she wrote, referring to the 17-year-old girl who was found raped and disembowelled in the Western Cape earlier that month.

Pistorius to be freed on Friday

On Friday, however, all focus will be on the gates of the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria when Pistorius is due to be released on correctional supervision after serving 10 months of his five-year sentence for culpable homicide.
