Police believe that Sizwesakhe Vumazonke, 30, was the “trigger man” that was paid by Jayde’s husband Chris Panayiotou to murder her on 21 April.
Vumazonke was arrested on Sunday and has been charged with the abduction and murder of the 29-year-old teacher. His case was postponed to June 19 when he will appear alongside Jayde’s husband Christopher.
According to a report by Algoa FM, the right side of Vumazonke was severely bruised when he faced the court this morning. The presiding magistrate asked what happened, and he responded in Afrikaans, saying he had been assaulted by police.
Husband appeared in court yesterday
Christopher Panayiotou, 28, made a brief appearance and was told he faced charges of kidnapping, robbery and murder, as well as conspiracy to kill his wife. He has not yet applied for bail, and so remains in police custody.
Another man arrested in connection with the crimes, Thando Siyoli, 31, appeared in the same court on Thursday last week. Details had emerged that a substantial amount of money was allegedly paid to kill her.
Jayde Panayiotou was abducted outside her Kabega Park home on Tuesday, April 21, while waiting for her lift to the school where she taught. She was later found dead on the outskirts of the Kwanobuhle township in Uitenhage.
