After years of study and practice as a lawyer, Niki Malherbe has published her insightful (and often hilarious) documentation of her unique journey of motherhood.
The culmination of her writing is her first non-fiction work, From courtrooms to cupcakes, which was released in April 2014 and is now available in selected bookstores around the country.
Niki Malherbe is a better mother than I
She has successfully juggled raising four children with marriage and part-time work – and kept her sense of humour through it all. She also seems to mostly regard her children with warm and fuzzy feelings, while I battle to raise one daughter without the daily occurrence of tantrums and tears – on the part of both mother and daughter.
But what we have in common is the fear we both shared at the beginning of the journey which is motherhood: that by giving up full-time work to look after children, we would be diminishing our self worth and our ability to make a useful contribution to society.
It can take years to realise that raising children – and being there for them every day when they get home from school – is one of the most important (and most difficult) jobs in the world.
This book will make you laugh out loud at the quirks and foibles of small children – and feel nostalgic about the years when your children were little and you were the centre of their world and could do nothing wrong.

It’s about a happy family and how they make the simple everyday parts of belonging to a family fun. (Of course, this is an account of life in upper-income South Africa – and nannies and au pairs do make it easier than trying to do it all alone, in the poverty of the Cape Flats for example.)
But it’s an honest account of life as a mom by an author with a great attitude to mothering – she has time and patience for her children and is always there for them. Just as she has had the privilege of being able to stay at home and mother them, so her children have had the equally great privilege of having a mom who was always there for them, and put all her energy into creating a happy childhood that will enable them to enter adulthood as confident and secure human beings.
I’m just waiting for Niki to put all her blogs together in a book about raising four teenagers – to see if she keeps her sense of humour…!
