Soli took to social media on Thursday where he, “In My Own Words”, announced the news of his divorce from wife Toni, rather than wait for the media to break the news

In a lengthy letter, the stalwart stand-up comedian wrote that he struggled to find the right words to break the news of his split from his wife of 30 years, saying that he finds himself “starting and re-starting this most hardest communication that I’ve yet had to make on social media”.

“Reality forces me though to share here what will most likely be revealed in the media tomorrow, and has been colouring my every waking moment and informing my dreams for the last month,” he continues.

“I have left my wife and partner of the last more than thirty years, Toni Philander. The mother of my children, my best friend and the anchor and light of my life for longer than I have been alive without her.”

Soli told Daily Voice that he was the person who asked for the divorce, but explains that he is riddled with guilt

“It is not easy accepting that I am the architect of such profound hurt, pain and loss, but that I also know that this completely selfish and seemingly villainous act makes sense in my journey in life”

“Let me hasten to add that it is something I have chosen, and that I acknowledge that I have wrought hurt and devastation on all fronts.

“It is not easy accepting that I am the architect of such profound hurt, pain and loss, but that I also know that this completely selfish and seemingly villainous act makes sense in my journey in life, my journey to myself and the integrity of my life experience,” he writes further.

Soli asked that people respect his family’s privacy during this time

According to the publication, Toni – with whom Soli has four children – is currently living in Belhar, after moving out of the house she shared with her husband.

Tweeting from her Twitter account, the name of which she has changed to “toni someone else”, she recently wrote: “I know that somewhere out there, a house is hunting for me. I am here, revealed, and waiting.”

And amidst a number of social media updates that suggest she’s going through a difficult time, is a tweet that reads: “Learning about solitude, and wondering if it’s akin to loneliness. Time tells that story.”

Also talking to social media on Thursday, Toni wrote: “It’s been a hella day, and the morrow brings but nought respite methinks. So to bed I will, to the arms of sleep.”
