The City of Cape Town is reeling in shock after an off-duty metro police officer was shot on Wednesday afternoon while sitting in his bakkie outside his home in Philippi East.

Constable Mzuvukile Mhlengi, aged 49, was unarmed at the time of the attack and according to the City, the killer got away with the officer’s other vehicle – a red Toyota Corolla.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the off-duty officer was found lying next to his vehicle in Disa Road at about 13:40.

“The motive for the attack is possibly robbery,” he added.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said Mhlengi had been stationed at the Metro Police Control Room in Goodwood and had 19 years of service with the department.

“The City expresses its sincerest condolences to Constable Mhlengi’s wife and teenaged daughter, as well as his extended family, colleagues, and friends. This senseless act is condemned in the strongest terms, and we will do everything we can to assist police in their investigation.”

Smith called on anyone with information about Mhlengi’s murder to come forward with information.

Police have launched a manhunt for the gunmen responsible for the murder.

As yet, no arrests have been made.
