For obvious reasons, self-tanning when you’re a brown girl seems like a silly idea…

…but the truth is, it’s really not!

I recently tested the Skinny Tan range of self-tan products and this was my experience…

I was pretty skeptical about what kind of results I would get, and if I would even end up looking like a downright fool.

The good news is that I didn’t (when I got it right) and the bad news is that it involved lots of trial and error to get there.

There are many reasons why men and women choose to self-tan. If you’re a brown girl, there can be lots of benefits too…

Sun-kissed skin, without the sun

It’s simple and (generally) no-fuss.  With the self-tan’s built in glow and relatively quickly, you can look bronzed and beautiful in a bikini or even on a night out.

Even complexion

Many women like myself have a pale torso and thighs in comparison to the rest of your body. Using a self-tan product can help even out the colour.

This is perfect for warmer months when you will be wearing less clothing.

Hide scars, stretch marks and pigmentations

Self-tan covers up any skin imperfections like scars, stretch marks and even cellulite… That’s a win in my book!

With that being said, they are some pointers to keep in mind when applying your self-tan. This is what I’ve noted from my experience…

Use sparingly!

A little really does go a long way.  If you go overboard you may risk looking like a roasted peanut (or worse).

Choose the right product for your skin type, shade and desired results

This is especially important if you a) have a darker skin tones, b) want a natural or full glam look or c) want an instant or gradual tanning product.

Gradually build your tan

It’s much easier to start off with the minimal (and natural looking) results and build on it by applying more product.

Be patient

If the instructions tell you to wait 2-3 hours, then do so without smudging your skin on anything.

This will ensure a streak-free and optimal result.

Don’t apply it on your face (my personal suggestion)

Unless you want to look like Donald Trump’s niece,  rather use a foundation/BB cream/bronzer or specific facial self-tan to achieve your desired look.

Tread carefully when it comes to knees, elbows, ankles and wrists

This is a tricky one and if you get it wrong, you may end up looking streaky and totally obvious.

You’re best bet is to use a self-tan mitten when applying the product to ensure that it is spread around evenly and smoothly.

I also personally used the tiniest amount of product on the tops of my hands and feet and completely forgo fingers and toes.

Don’t forget to exfoliate!

You may have brown skin to start with, but you don’t want to end up with patchy skin if you miss this step!

Removing dead skin cells is integral to achieving the golden goddess look, if that is what you’re after. Try a bath mitten with some store-bought or home made exfoliator (coarse salt or brown sugar with a bit of baby oil or coconut oil).
