Two men were shot dead, and four others arrested during a shootout with police on the M1 highway, next to Woodmead Drive off-ramp, in Sandton on Wednesday.

The incident followed Crime Intelligence members receiving a tip-off about the robbers.

“Police from Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Unit and Johannesburg Flying Squad operationalised the information and kept observation,” police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said in a statement on Wednesday.

Masondo adds that at 11:45 on Wednesday, police saw 10 suspects in two Audi A4s and a Hyundai i20, on the highway.

“The suspects then fired some shots at a white Toyota Fortune, forcing it to stop. Police intercepted the suspects who fired shots at the police, and a shootout ensued,” Masondo said.
