At least half of international airlines that usually fly to and from South Africa have yet to lift a ban on operations in the country…

In December 2020, many countries blacklisted South Africa out of fears that the new Covid-19 variant detected in the country was “more severe” than strains found elsewhere.

Emirates this week extended their travel ban on South Africa with out-bound flights suspended until 22 April 2021.

According to the airline, this is in line with government directives that restrict the entry of travellers originating from South Africa, into the UAE.

Less than half of international airlines are currently operational in South Africa

Just 12 of the 32 international airlines that operated in South Africa prior to the pandemic are currently operating according to the Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa (Barsa). Bans will be reconsidered only after April.
