Bear Grylls’ ‘Running Wild’ team always take a dead bird on treks for celebrities to eat in case they cannot find any other food.

The adventurer has headed on hikes with the likes of Kate Hudson and Jonathan Ross in the past, and while they’re out in the wilderness producers have a contingency plan to make sure the stars don’t starve.

Speaking to Radio Times magazine, he said: “The destinations we visited for this new series were so amazing.

“On these kinds of trips, I normally get the crew to bring a dead pigeon along.

“Then, if I can’t find anything else to eat out in the wild, they chuck the pigeon in a bush, I pull it out, and my guest and I tuck in.”

However, Bear was keen to point out the back-up bird isn’t used every time, and wasn’t needed at all for the new series.

He added: “That happens on maybe one in five trips – but not in any of the places on this series.”

Last year, Cara Delevingne opened up about her own experiences on the show, which included cooking a rat.

Cara enjoyed the dish after learning how to gut the rodent with her bare hands.

She said: “To be honest it didn’t taste that bad. It was very chewy.

“It was just the whole thing of gutting it first with my fingers and then eating it not that soon after. That was a weird experience.”

Bear took Cara on a two-day trek across the mountains of Sardinia.

He explained: “I think the great strength of ‘Running Wild’ is that you have time on these journeys to get to know the real person and to hear their stories.

“It’s not like a chat show where you’re just trying to tell a funny story for two minutes. When you have to spend two days together, you really get to know someone.”
