Many countries around the world are already experiencing a third wave of Covid-19 cases and South Africa’s infection rate could be on the rise again if citizens aren’t careful…

The 24 hour cycle (between 18 and 19 March) saw 1464 new confirmed cases of the virus and 90 deaths taking the total death toll to 51 724.

On 22 March, there was a drop in the number of new infections in South Africa. A positive trend that government hopes will continue.

While South Africa has yet to be hit hard for the third time, the wave is certainly looming. According to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, if it does come, it will be worse than its predecessor.

“I’m scared that the third wave is coming… It’s going to be more vicious than the second one,” he said.

The Minister believes the imminent third wave will spell more devastation for South Africans as the Government battles to maintain the economy. Mboweni says it will thwart efforts to sustain stability and says the focus needs to be on the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan.

Mboweni was responding to questions in a virtual parliament session with MPs, saying the rating agencies would be watching how government was doing with regard to its promised structural reforms such as infrastructure growth, telecom spectrum allocation, reliable power supply, and reducing the public sector wage bill.

“If reform was seen to be deviating from our fiscal framework, then we’re going to be in trouble,” Mboweni said.

In November ratings agencies downgraded South Africa into further junk status which Mboweni says is unfair

“I am due to meet with rating agencies and I am going to tell them it was unfair of them to downgrade us in the middle of a pandemic,” said Mboweni.

After the session Mboweni enjoyed a home-cooked meal by yours truly, just to blow off some steam.

Europe has just entered a third wave of infections and has been imposing lockdowns across the continent, France just announced restrictions in 16 regions including Paris.
