A recent case study detailed the birth of a baby born with COVID-19 antibodies. This after his mother received a vaccine shot during her pregnancy.
In a hospital in Palm Beach County, Florida, a newborn’s umbilical cord test came out positive for COVID-19 antibodies. Extensive research has been ongoing to study the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine on pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The mother is a front-line worker
The mother, a front-line worker, received her first shot of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at 36-weeks gestation and gave birth three weeks later. This was in January 2021.
These findings were published in the Medrxiv medical journal in March 2021.
According to WPBF, Dr. Paul Gilbert and Dr. Chad Rudnick of Palm Beam County have claimed this victory. “We tested the baby’s cord to see if the antibodies in the mother passed to the baby which is something, we see happen with other vaccines given during pregnancy,” Gilbert said.
“This is one small case in what will be thousands and thousands of babies born to mothers who have been vaccinated for the next several months,” Rudnick said.
Victory for vaccine
The two local paediatricians believe that this is the beginning of many victories for medical professionals, countries, and patients alike.
This is marked as a big win because new research indicates that pregnant women are at higher risk of severe COVID-19. This is equally a victory for Palm Beach County as they observe and try manage a spike of COVID-19 cases in recent weeks.
The mother received her second shot of the vaccine after birth and both mommy and baby are healthy and happy.
