Can pregnant and breastfeeding mothers be athletes?

In a moving and awe-inspiring ad by Nike, women are reminded of the innate strength that they have. In a world where female athletes are made to question their capabilities by virtue of being a woman, especially a mother, Nike describes them as “The Toughest Athlete”.

“Can you be an athlete and a mother?”

The challenges that women and mothers face, according to the ad, is equal to the capabilities needed to be an athlete (and accomplish both at the same time!). “Someone who moves, gets things done no matter what, listens to her body, defies gravity, deals with the pain and pushes past it and deserves every single win.”

It takes this and more to carry and birth a human life. It takes even more to raise a happy and healthy child.

Navigating the changes to one’s body, including the discomfort and pain of shifting organs to make space for a baby are some of the realities moms face. This is the same energy and commitment they use to become strong mothers for their kids and stronger athletes in the field.

The world’s greatest female athletes such as Serena Williams, Alex Morgan, and Shelly-Ann Fraser were featured in this ad by a London-based advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy. These female athletes are mothers who are continuing to excel even after the birth of their children.
