If you didn’t already know, celebrities are not above the law!
This week Isibaya actress Zinhle Mabena was arrested, and subsequently released… This after the court found that there was no evidence to back up the claims that she had been involved in a plot to kill her husband. In a surprising turn of events, which could have been taken straight from a soap opera, her lawyer now claims she a victim of intimidation. Read the details HERE.
However, in South Africa, celebrities getting arrested is nothing new
We’ve seen a host of the country’s biggest stars being locked up for committing crimes of various nature. From heavy crimes like culpable homicide to lighter offences like shoplifting, police officers have never taken it easy on our celebrities just because of their famous status.
Do you remember some of these high-profile arrests?
The disgraced former Expresso presenter was arrested at the beginning of January after violating the terms of his court order set out against him by his estranged wife, Monique Muller.
Khanya Mkangisa broke the internet for all the wrong reasons back in 2019 when she was arrested for driving under the influence. She believes officers made an example of her.
Norma Gigaba trended during lockdown after her estranged husband, Malusi Gigaba, ordered the Hawks (yes, South Africa’s priority crime investigation unit…) to arrest her after she keyed a car belonging to a friend of his.
Former Generations star, Maggie Benedict trended for days after she was arrested for allegedly shoplifting a pack of Panado at a Checkers grocery store in Johannesburg. Maggie believes the law was abused just because she was a public figure.
Jub Jub’s arrest, following a drunken driving incident that claimed the lives of four children, was one of the most high profile (and one of the most tragic) which South Africa has ever seen. He has since served his time and was released in 2017.
As far as celebrity arrests go, you don’t get many bigger than Oscar Pistorius. The Olympic athlete was a hero to many until Valentine’s Day 2013 when he fatally shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. He was arrested and charged with culpable homicide and has been in jail since.
