Letting out a loud or foul-smelling fart in public can be really embarrassing. Even though the average person farts around 23 times daily, many of us would prefer it if the world believed we never farted, not even in our sleep

This is why most people hold farts in until they are alone or in a ‘safe place’. While this might be polite it isn’t very comfortable and according to research, it can also be bad for your health.

Where does fart gas come from?

We all fart. The body needs to get rid of gas accumulated during the process of digestion, swallowed when you eat, drink and smoke. Some foods, stress and digestive stress can make you fart more than normal and also make your farts smell more.
Farting is natural and does not necessarily mean you are ill, although if the smell of your farts is stronger than normal or causes discomfort t could be a sign that your digestive system isn’t working as if should or that you have eaten food that doesn’t really agree with you.

What happens when you hold in a fart?

UK based GP Dr Faraz, shared a tik tok video explaining the hazards of holding in a fart which includes, heartburn, bloating and abdominal pain and worst of all the gas could re-direct and come straight out of your mouth; as a burp that smells (and tastes like a fart).
