Following her dramatic exit from the show back in 2019, Moshidi Motshegwa has shared some insights into her beef with her ex-costar on The River, Larona Moagi.

Veteran actress Moshidi Motshegwa needs no introduction to the masses of South Africa. The award-winning actress has graced our screens for years, but the past 18 months of her career have been marred by controversy. This week, Moshidi spoke candidly and openly about a series of incidents which would go on to change the course of her career forever when she shared the sordid details behind her exit from 1Magic’s The River.

Inside Moshidi’s explosive exit from The River

Nearly two years ago, headlines were filled with reports that Moshidi Motshegwa’s tenure on The River was coming to an end. Tshedza Pictures was willing to cut ties with one of its biggest stars and at the time we suspected that it had something to do with tensions that were brewing on set with Moshidi’s co-star, Larona Moagi.

Moshidi, who played the role of Malefu, had been quoted a number of times saying that her co-star, who rose to fame as an Instagram influencer rather than a trained thespian, needed training. In the end, the producers stuck with the younger actress and Moshidi was forced to exit stage left.

In a tell-all interview with DRUM Magazine this week, Moshidi finally opened up about exactly what went down behind the scenes. Larona was cast as Moshidi’s on-screen daughter (Itumeleng) which meant the two had to work together very closely.

Looking back on that period in her career, the SAFTA-winning actress explained where her concerns lay when she said to DRUM, “It was very difficult to work with Larona. We can’t cast people from Instagram, give them a huge role and not give them support. Moshidi continued to add:”I even said at the meeting(with producers) that Larona is struggling because she is not an actress and has been given a huge role to play. This is a craft. It is a skill.””

That awkward moment when ….

The tension didn’t end there, either! After her humiliating exit from the drama, things took an awkward turn just under a month later when the 2019 SAFTAs took place. Not only did The River win 10 Golden Horns including “Best Telenovela” and “Best Crew” at the annual ceremony, but the “Best Actress” award went to, yup, you guessed it, Moshidi Motshegwa for her role as Malefu on the show – one month after she had been fired! When her former co-stars offered her a spot in the cast’s group picture, the star snubbed them and walked off.

Do you think we will see Moshidi Motshegwa back on our screens this year?
