The Drakensberg area is absolutely gorgeous. Along the Sani Pass you will find fresh spring water on your hiking trail, bushman paintings in caves, deep, deep gorges and random waterfalls in caves.

And all along the mountains, rivers, streams, brightly coloured flowers, birds, elands, the odd jackal, trout fishing… (sigh) the Sani Pass is an absolute gem.

The best times to visit the area are round about January when all the flowers are in bloom – what a beautiful sight!

We camped at this lovely little backpackers called Sani Lodge, a quaint little place where thereâ??s always beer in the fridge to put on your tab, great service, kitchen and braai facilities, and a gorgeous tea room that serves breakfast, lunch and supper.

Moving further up the mountain, across the border, we stayed at Lesothoâ??s Sani Top Hotel – a place that boasts the highest pub in Africa atop the
Drankensberg mountains.

The people in the Sani Pass area are absolutely amazing. Very friendly, very laid-back, and with a good mix of tourists from all over Europe and America, as well as some locals, the evenings were always a blast at both lodges.

I strongly suggest that if you havenâ??t seen the Sani Pass, to get yourself there as soon as possible. Day tours can also be arranged from nearby Pietermaritzburg by shuttle.
