Non-surgical lipo is all the rage in celebville with Kelly Khumalo and 7de Laan’s Mimi Mahlasela recently posting about their non-surgical experiences. But does it really work?

What is non-surgical lipo?

Several procedures fall under the non-surgical liposuction umbrella. These procedures are aimed at fat reduction to mimic the effects o surgical fat removal.
The idea is to target problem areas where your body holds unwanted fat and gradually shrink the fat cells. The process is faster than diet and exercise, slower than surgical liposuction and requires little to no recovery time.

Laser lipo

Laser lipo uses heat to liquefy fat cells so that they can pass through the lymphatic system. Although this process works from the very beginning, it might take a few sessions before you can see the results.

Treatment is offered at spas and gyms and laser wands are even available for home use.

The science behind the procedure is solid. You can permanently remove fat cells from your body through laser lipo.
The only way to make sure your body doesn’t build up new fat stores (which can happen before you even see your results) is to pair the procedure with regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Cavitation ultrasonic lipolysis

This procedure is often used for sculpting and shaping and followed by a laser skin tightening treatment.

It is all about appearances and is a firm favourite for those looking to get a teeny-weeny waist without losing weight anywhere else on the body.
Similar to laser lipo, this treatment uses heat to liquefy fat cells before flushing them out into the lymphatic system and out of the body.

Cool sculpting

If a Kloe Kardashian style revenge body is what you are after, you might want to take a cooler approach to fat reduction.
Coolsculpting is lauded as the most successful non-surgical fat reduction procedures because unlike the others, you could see results after just a single treatment.

Coolsculpting cools areas of your body down to extremely low temperatures destroying the fat cells which leave the body through the lymphatic system.

Although by all accounts this treatment is not pain-free and your body will need to recover before you can enjoy the results, you can continue with your everyday activities as you recover and it not as hectic as recovering from surgery.

So where does all this fat go?

As with most waste created by the body, destroyed fat cells leave the body through the lymphatic system. This means the fat you lose during these non-invasive procedures passes through your body as urine.

While drinking water can help with weight loss generally and contribute to the functioning of your lymphatic system; drinking more water will not make these procedures work faster.
