Cheerio Gardens are set in a quiet valley in the green mountains of Magoebaskloof. These public gardens are famous for their spring spectacle when hundreds of azaleas and cherry blossom trees bloom. The camellias, hydrangeas, irises and foxgloves also flower, making for a truly beautiful experience. Bring a blanket and enjoy sitting beneath the trees in the peaceful surroundings. There is also a small retail nursery if you’re keen on a souvenir plant to take home.

Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden
Escape the city and take a picnic to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden, one of the most beautiful green spaces in Gauteng. It
boasts stunning views with an array of flora and fauna, a waterfall, educational walks and even a black eagle that nests at the waterfall kraals. There is also a mini-train that operates on weekends and is great fun for the kids.
Kids under six enter free, students pay R15 and adults pay R40.

Cape Point Vineyards Estate
Enjoy a delicious, family-friendly meal in a unique setting with 360-degree views of mountains, fynbos, vineyards and glorious sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean at this winery in Noordhoek. There is lots of space for children to play on the lawns while you take in the scenery from your chosen spot. Picnics are served from 12pm to 5pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and weekends.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
This national treasure provides the perfect setting for a picnic with the family, as you sit among the indigenous plant life. On Sunday afternoons during summer, the garden hosts outdoor concerts with local and international artists. There’s also a Boomslang Treetop Canopy walkway that offers stunning views over the gardens and Table Mountain.
Entrance fee is R55 per adult, R15 per child and children under six enter free.

There are lily ponds, rockeries, gigantic palms and peaceful retreats. Happy Valley is connected to Humewood Beach via a sandy subway. Entrance is free.

These gardens are beautiful and a delight to explore – there are stretches of perfectly manicured lawns, 18 different ponds, a waterfall that feeds a small stream and magnificent Japanese gardens complete with bridges, lanterns, walkways and handcarved figures.
