Keeping little ones entertained on weekends can be quite challenging at time. Next time you run out of ideas, take them to one of these child-friendly outdoor spots for some fun in the sun.

Helderberg Farm, Klein Helderbergpad Road, Raithby

Why it’s great for kids:

Not only is this the ideal venue for your child’s birthday party, it’s also a fabulous spot for families who love spending time outdoors. Kids will love the farmyard and playpark which has bunnies, ducks, goats and chickens (feed is available at the kiosk too). Little ones can also pick strawberries and go on gorgeous forest walks, or simply play in the kiddies area- close to the teagarden.

The tranquil teagarden offers a casual dining experience and if you’re in the mood for delicious freshly baked cakes, the chocolate cake and baked cheesecake are their most popular choices. It’s also worth trying their traditional Roosterkoek served with bacon and scrambled egg or tasty samoosas.

Perfect for the whole family, the lush area has superb hiking and mountain biking trails, a tea garden under the shady trees and play areas for kids. There’s also the opportunity to have a picnic or braai in the forest next to the farmyard. Portable braais and chairs are available, plus charcoal at the kiosk. There’s also Lazer Quest, combat games and paintball for older kids.

Vergelegen Wine Estate , Somerset West, Cape Town

Why it’s great for kids:

Although at first-glance you wouldn’t think this wine estate is suitable for children, it’s actually the ideal playground complete with over 15 gardens including beautiful rose gardens, scenic walks, a historic museum (R10 gets you in) and one of the most impressive play areas for kids in the Cape. The rich heritage of the place also lends itself to a great history lesson as you take the kids to visit the homestead, library, Mill ruins and slave lodge site and surrounding gardens.
