Beyoncé and Jay Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter celebrated her fourth birthday on 7 January with a magical princess fairyland party. Bey spared no costs to celebrate this special event. The entire grounds were decorated according to the theme and entertainers in princess costumes delighted the guests.

We show you how to recreate this princess fairyland party without breaking the bank:

  • From the invitations to the party favours, this theme is simple to pull off on any budget and packs a large sprinkling of magical fairy dust.
  • Best set in your garden, you can create small pockets of interest. A garden also gives the much-needed space for little fairies to dance about.
  • If you have a little extra budget, consider getting entertainers, like Fairy Time, to lend a hand with your party. They’re creative and passionate about their parties and the fairies will enthral your little ones with dancing, singing and reading. They’ll also bring an array of fairy outfits for the birthday girl and her friends to wear, so every little fairy will feel special.
  • If you’re looking for a special fairy outfit, visit a costume shop like Parkview Ballet & Dress Up in Johannesburg. The shop is packed with a wide selection of affordable, pretty dresses.
  • Set the scene with dreamlike cupcakes, such as those featured here from Annica’s Designer Cakes. The biscuit wands are an enchanting touch and the magical two-tier toad stool cake embodies the essence of the mystical fun essential to any fairy party.
  • You’ll find all the extra special touches at In Good Company — we especially love their fairy cups, plates and bunting.

Clever ideas

  • Create a Berry Pixie punch by simply mixing together strawberry and cranberry juice (fresh or 100% is best) and adding the same amount of water. Fill sweet little bottles with the punch and tie the labels around the neck with twine. Download your labels here.
  • Adorn star wands with pretty ribbon and place in a glass decanter.
  • Use an old hat stand to hold dress-up extras with a chalk board labelled ‘Grab a wand and some wings’.
  • There’s no need for fancy tablecloths. Use a pink bed sheet with a simple lace
cloth layered on top. The contrast of the two really makes a statement.
  • Marshmallows are a favourite at any party. For something a little different, find twisted marshmallows and skewer them with sosatie sticks. Place them in a DIY container like the money boxes and magnetic butterflies we used here.
  • When it comes to food and treats, let the colours you choose speak to your theme. Colourful macaroons, peach balls, marshmallow cups, milk bottle sweets, fruit bites, fairy shells and oh-so-clever fairy sushi are the perfect match.
  • Party favours are a wonderful extra, but can end up being expensive. Make your own fairy dust by filling tins or bottles with glitter and stars, or opt for bath-time fairy beans like those available at In Good Company.
  • String up honeycomb pom poms in your trees and use birdcages lined with moss, fresh flowers and fairy cut-outs to add to the enchanted feel.
