You don’t have to hang out at the mall all weekend or take your kids on en expensive weekend away to bond and spend quality time with them. Make the most of your time together with these fun weekend activities the whole family can enjoy together.
1. Arts and crafts
If it’s raining outside or if it’s just too hot to run around outdoors, sit down with your kids and help them make these fun matchbox crafts. Matchboxes make wonderful little presents; you can create fun, easy crafts in no time and it’s a fun, creative way to teach your children about recycling.
Spray paint the matchboxes and get the kids to draw on faces. Use pipe cleaners for antennae, feet or tentacles.
Draw simple pencil sketches. Use a little red pencil to highlight some aspects of the drawing.
- Cut out your monster shape from felt.
- Use a little light stuffing for the body.
- Use buttons for eyes.
Matchbox favours / thank yous
- Cover the matchbox with pretty scrapbooking paper.
- Fill with small sweets, mints or a little bracelet.
- Tie with a pretty ribbon and your own little card.
You can give these to your child’s teacher when school closes.
2. Have a picnic
Pack a picnic basket filled with your family’s favourite treats and set it up in your back yard for a fun day with the kids. You can plan a treasure hunt with clues in the garden or try one of these fun outdoor games. If you feel like an outing, drive to your nearest park and set up your picnic there. Remember the ball and Frisbee to keep the little ones busy while you relax under the trees. Don’t have a safe park in your area? There are many picnic deals available on the beautiful wine farms in the Western Cape this time of the year.
3. Have a bake off
Kids love making anything from cupcakes and cookies to pizza, because they get to squish the dough with their fingers. Get the whole family together in the kitchen for a baking contest – you can have a cookie decorating contest or the panel of judges (Mom and Dad) can decide whose pizza tastes the best. Click here for an easy cookie dough recipe. You can buy ready-made pizza bases from the supermarket or make your own from scratch with this quick and easy recipe.
4. Make a mini hothouse
Introduce your little ones to gardening by helping them make their very own mini hothouse. It’s really easy to get started and the kids will love watching their seedlings grow. Click here for instructions on what you need and how to get started.
