Your toddler needs to develop important physical skills such as coordination and balance, and needs to improve his stamina and strength.

Physical development:

  •  Your child needs a lot of physical activity to help his spatial understanding, his balance and coordination skills. Getting plenty of exercise not only burns off excess energy, it establishes a positive body image and a sense of self-esteem. Let your child walk often and let him play outside instead of sitting in front of the television frequently.

Social and emotional development:

  • You might find that your child becomes more social as he starts to anticipate events and expresses pleasure at certain activities. He may also begin to show his excitement when he sees a friend he recognises or enjoys playing with. Forming attachments outside his immediate family is evidence of your child’s widening emotional development. He is starting to form relationships based on his own positive feelings about being a person, independent of you.

  • At this stage it is still easier for a child to remember language that is reinforced through physical activity, such as songs. In the same way, when you tell your child to do something, reinforce it with similar actions like closing a door for example. Also encourage your toddler to engage in pretend play, since it is an absorbing way to develop his imagination.
