Shauwn Mkhize and the Ferguson family have made the country jealous with their respective trips to Dubai during lockdown.

While many of us were trying to find inventive ways to count down until the new year, other South African celebrities had different plans. The likes of Connie and Shona Ferguson, as well as the flamboyant Mam’Mkhize, traded in Bheki Cele’s harsh 9 PM bedtime for a far more expansive new year vacation in Dubai.

We would be lying if we said we weren’t a little bit jealous of their exploits!

To Dubai and beyond

Dubai has always been a favoured destination for many of South Africa’s richest and most famous personalities. The city at the heart of the United Arab Emirates offers number of exciting activities all year round, and it doesn’t hurt that flights from South Africa to Dubai are usually quite affordable for most people (even those travelling first and business class).

So, when faced with the prospect of a sombre and sober New Year’s Eve in South Africa, largely thanks to President Ramaphosa’s announcement to return the country to level three of lockdown, it came as no surprise that those who had the resources to fly somewhere far away, wasted no time in doing so.

Shauwn Mkhize was the first to pack her bags and dash off to the sunny surrounds of Dubai when she learned the news and dozens of South Africans couldn’t help but envy her.

A family vacay for the Fergusons

Meanwhile, the Fergusons will definitely be counting their lucky stars that they planned their trip just as South Africa was plugned into lockdown once again. Connie and Shona have been sharing a series of loved up posts from Dubai since the last week of December (just before Ramaphosa’s announcement) and judging from recent snaps, they are in no hurry to get back home.

Their younger children Lesedi and Alicia also joined in on the vacation fun, the former of whom celebrated her birthday while in Dubai.

The family has been staying at a lavish beach-side resort and if rumours of increased lockdown restrictions are anything to go by, then we wouldn’t be surprised if they stayed in Dubai even longer.

If you had the resources to be travelling during the pandemic, where would you choose to be?
