Formula One star Lewis Hamilton has been made a Sir in the New Years honours list, with other recipients of honours including Sheila Hancock, Craig David and actors Lesley Manville and Toby Jones.
Stefano Domenicali, Formula One’s incoming CEO, said: “Lewis is a true giant of our sport and his influence is huge both in and out of a car. What he has achieved is phenomenal with still more to come. All of us at Formula 1 congratulate him on this well deserved recognition of his achievements and look forward to seeing more of his brilliance in 2021.”
Meanwhile, Sheila admitted she felt “slightly miscast” after being made a Dame.
She said: “I’ve never felt this sort of person myself. It just doesn’t happen to people like me. I feel I may be lowering the tone. I feel slightly miscast, let’s put it that way.”
Elsewhere, Craig David has been recognised with an MBE whilst ‘Harry Potter‘ actor Toby Jones was given an OBE. Lesley Manville – Academy Award nominee – is made a CBE.
It’s been a great year for Lewis as he was recently named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
He said: “I want to say congratulations to all the incredible nominees. I’m so proud of what they have achieved and I want to say thank you to everyone that has voted for me. I wasn’t expecting this knowing there’s so many great contenders. I want to say Merry Christmas to everyone – it’s been such an unusual year and I want to mention all the front line workers and all the children round the world, I want you to try and stay positive through this difficult time, I’m sending you all positivity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
