What was hot and what was not in the year 2001?

Google first released its top searches list 20 years ago, and the results give us a glimpse into a fascinating history or search.

From “Harry Potter” to “Osama Bin Laden” and “Florida Supreme Court” to “Napster,” the Google Year-End Zeitgeist from 2001 reveals what captured the world’s attention two decades ago. Did you search for any of these?

If you’re not feeling old already, the Nokia 5510 and Nokia 3310 were amongst the top new products Googled 20 years ago, Anna Kournikova topped sports queries, Britney Spears was the most searched woman, followed closely by Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Lopez. The top Googled men were not Hollywood celebs, instead they included Nostradamus and Osama Bin Laden.

If you can believe it, the top movie from 20 years ago was Harry Potter. Yes, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released on 16 November, 2001! How time flies!

2020 took a very different turn, with the Coronavirus pandemic taking centre stage

A lot of people were asking ‘how to’… especially when it came to grooming and beauty!

Some of the top How To searches included:

  1. How to cut men’s hair at home
  2. How to plop hair
  3. How to colour your hair at home
  4. How to cut women’s hair
  5. How to dermaplane

We also turned to the kitchen for some comfort… millions Googled how to make sourdough bread, and banana bread. Working from home was also one of the topics of the year, as well as virtual tours and home date night ideas.
