City firefighters don’t get called on too often to help deliver babies, but on Friday the crew from Goodwood helped to deliver a little Christmas cheer to a couple in need…
“I often boast that our firefighters are ready for everything, especially with the summer season in full swing, but this time around they were ready to help deliver a baby. At around 11:35 a vehicle stopped in front of the Goodwood Fire Station with a harried gentleman who told firefighters on duty his wife was in labour and needed help.”
“Senior firefighter Denzil Benny assessed the situation and saw the baby was already crowning. He and firefighter Jacques Swanepoel then helped the mother deliver a healthy baby boy just 10 minutes after the couple had pulled up. The parents were quite surprised as they were told to expect a baby girl,” explained Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The baby’s vitals were taken, and the parents made their way to a hospital.
“Recently another team of firefighters helped a mother deliver a baby on the roof of a house. These men and women do their uniform proud by going the extra mile for the communities they serve,” said Alderman Smith.
