Google has spilled the tea on what South Africans were searching for this year. From donut recipes to juicy celeb gossip, Mzansi explored the world from behind their screens…
In South Africa, Coronavirus was top of everyone’s minds this year and the pandemic’s impact is reflected in the Year in Search lists. Besides the pandemic, South Africans turned to Google to get the latest gossip on trending celebs.
And guess who made the number one spot?
After an explosive video went viral, Expresso’s Katlego Maboe was the person South Africans searched for most on Google this year. Unfortunately, his name skyrocketed to the top of the list for all the wrong reasons.
A video shot by his wife in which he confesses to having an affair went viral. Not only were South Africans suddenly interested in Katlego’s love life, they also wanted to know who his alleged mistress was. Nikita Murray (the woman named in the video) was the second most googled name, while Katlego’s wife, Monique Muller was all the way at the bottom of the list at number ten.
Another person who made it to the top three for all the wrong reasons was Edwin Sodi. While the businessman had a reputation in the business world, it was his alleged connection to corruption and the Free State asbestos scandal that had South Africans intrigued. The ‘tender tycoon’ had a number of his precious assets seized by the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit including his Ferrari and a Bentley.
Media personality and DJ, Lerato Kganyago was at number four on the list – possibly due to her shock split from her hubby after being married for less than two months. She revealed that she was separating from her businessman partner, Thami Ndlala, in June – who has since been accused of alleged fraudulent activity – after claiming they had “different priorities and workloads”.
