Helen Zille found herself in the crossfire this week after poet Lebo Mashile came after her brand of politics in a critical way.

If there’s one political figure who is not popular among South Africa’s celebrities right now, (although let’s face it, there are a few!), it’s the DA’s Helen Zille. The chairperson of the country’s biggest opposition party has ruffled a few feathers down the years from the likes of Flex Rabanyan to Nandi Madida. This week, it was Lebo Mashile’s turn to give uGog’ Helen a piece of her mind and the poet did not spare any punches.

Lebo airs her thoughts on DA’s Helen Zille

While it’s common for people to disagree with politicians they don’t support, the criticism which Lebo levelled at Helen was loaded. Ever since the former Western Cape Premier has been on Twitter, she has seen her reputation take a nose dive, largely due to her own comments on race, privilege and colonialism.

This is exactly what inspired Lebo Mashile’s unprovoked Twitter rant this week when she took to the timeline to write, “At some point I genuinely believed that Helen Zille added value to political discourse in this country. She was someone I respected until Twitter. I’ve had her blocked for years. She is callous, racist, ignorant, & unrepentant. She has never been the woman she thinks she is”

Many people agreed with her, including fellow celebrities like Simphiwe Dana (more on her in a moment) and dozens of other Twitter users. Helen, for what it’s worth, is no longer active on Twitter but we’re sure someone would have brought the tweet to her attention.

Helen Zille vs the celebs of South Africa

In her early years on the app, Helen Zille tried to use Twitter as a vehicle to spread her message far and wide. While she’s succeeded in reaching the masses, she clearly didn’t anticipate the backlash she would receive for her points of view – especially from Mzansi’s biggest celebrities.

In the past, Helen has found herself feuding with a few local stars including:

Simphiwe Dana

When Lebo Mashile’s tweet went viral, Simphiwe was quick to remind people that she has never supported Helen Zille’s politics. Simphiwe has clashed with Helen on numerous occasions, most notably in 2011 when the two exchanged heated words over racism in Cape Town.

Nandi Madida

Nandi Madida was enraged when Helen Zille claimed that the death of Professor Bongani Mayosi might have had something to do with Fees Must Fall movements. The Black is King star felt as if Helen was pushing an unfair agenda.

Flex Rabanyan

Vuzu The Hustle winner, Flex Rabanyan tried to fight the good fight when he called Helen Zille out over her comments on colonialism, but she bit back with venom! When he tried to engage further, she ignored him.
