Firefighters were called out to an unusual emergency on Tuesday morning…
The crew from Belhar Fire Station were contacted to assist with a mom in labour – on top of the roof of a house in the Belhar neighbourhood.
According to a statement from Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, the mom had climbed up onto the roof of the home as it was her only way out of the yard of the residence.
However, she was not able to climb to safety as her labour intensified. The firefighters from Belhar were on the scene to help. They raised a ladder and climbed up onto the roof to assist the mom.
The rescuers helped in the delivery of the little one, and cut his umbilical cord, and monitored his vital signs until the rescue vehicle arrived from Epping Fire Station at 5:32AM.
According to the firefighters’ report, this was the mom’s second child. She has another son who is around four years old. According to reports, mom and baby are both in good health.
