So many of us have done it. We see the latest hair colour trend and decide to take the plunge, only to watch our transformation in the mirror with more horror than glee…
Deciding on which hair colour best suits you can come in the form of trial and error, but there are a few points that you should consider.
“Choosing a new hair colour is always very exciting, but not every colour suits every person,” comments Revlon Realistic brand manager.
“It is important to have fun with your hair and explore new directions, but before taking the leap, be honest with yourself about what will suit you. This can save you the need to find space in your closet for your new hats.”
When deciding on a hair colour and which product to choose, the following guidelines should be considered:
1. Know your skin tone
Your skin tone is important in determining which hair colour is best for you. Warmer skin tones have tones of pink, red and yellow which work better with warmer hair colours such as golden blondes or auburn browns. Cooler skin tones have hues of blue and citrusy notes, which suit the more ash blondes or purple-tinged red hair colours.
2. Try keep it close to natural
A rule of thumb is to stick within two shades of your natural hair colour as this will naturally match your complexion. Anything too light or too dark will wash out your skin tone.
3. Walk, don’t run
If you are looking to change your colour completely, take it slow. Build up to the colour you are aiming for, this way you can see if you are making the right decision before going all the way.
4. Create a style with your colour
There is no longer a need to have your hair all one colour, instead trends such as the ombre look are taking centre stage every year. Experiment with more than one colour and create new looks.
5. Protect your hair
If you are constantly colouring your hair, chances are it needs some TLC. Choose hair colouring products that offer hair protection such as Revlon Realistic’s Vivid Colour with its protein infused treatment and colour lock technology – ensuring that the colour lasts up to 25 washes – leaves hair healthy, feeling silky soft and finished with a high gloss. With a range of colours to suit different skin tones, Vivid Colour has been specifically formulated for ethnic hair.
