Twitter was trending with the news that a seismic tremor had hit Cape Town shortly after midnight on Monday…
Did you feel it?
According to reports, the tremor took place just off the west coast of Cape Town 47km from Saldanha Bay and measured 3.5 on the Richter scale.
Some South Africans were startled by the sudden rumbling, others slept right through it. But some just claimed it was the perfect addition to 2020 – nothing surprises us anymore.
Getting woken up by an earthquake is so on brand for 2020 #tremor

The tremor was felt in many parts of Cape Town, Saldanha, and Somerset West.
While small earthquakes and tremors are unusual in South Africa, they are not completely unheard of.
- In March 2019, an Earth tremor shook Jo’burg on a Friday morning.
- Later that year in October, KZN was shaken up by a tremor.
- A much larger tremor hit KZN in November 2019
- And in October this year, South Africa registered FIVE minor tremors in one day!
Here’s what some South Africans had to say about their experience:
Pretoria (home) is calling my name. This is not the content I signed up for. Bathong Cape Town yoh #tremor pic.twitter.com/7xQvyQs9VA
