Jerusalema hitmaker, Master KG, became the first artist from Limpopo to ever win an MTV European Music Award during last night’s ceremony.
As if things couldn’t get any better for Balobedu House hitmaker Master KG. After a 2020 which has seen him achieve worldwide fame, largely due to his sensational single Jerusalema, the DJ and musician made history on Sunday night when he walked away with his first ever award at the MTV European Music Award.
Master KG wins at the MTV EMAs
Considering the record-breaking success that Jerusalema has enjoyed, as well as the nature of the celebrities who have endorsed the uplifting hit single (from Cristiano Ronaldo to Janet Jackson,) it’s fair to say that Master KG came into this year’s MTV EMAs as a favourite. The muso from Tzaneen, Limpopo, was nominated in the Best African Act category alongside a number of top acts from across the continent.
Best African act nominees:
- Master KG (SA)
- DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small (SA)
- Burna Boy (Nigeria)
- Rema (Nigeria)
- Sheebah (Uganda)
- Gaz Mawete (DRC)
Despite the stiff competition, it was our beloved hitmaker who has inspired the global #JerusalemaChallenge who emerged as the winner of the highly coveted prize.
He thanked his fans during an excited acceptance speech where he said, “I would love to thank each and every person out there, all over the world, for making this possible. I would love to thank my sister Nomcebo Zikode, my team at Open Mic Productions. Everyone who is behind Master KG, thank you guys so much! To my fans all around the world, without you I don’t think this would be possible.”
Jerusalema’s worldwide success – by the numbers
Although we are aware of the global impact which Jerusalema has had, when you take a closer look at the numbers it becomes clearer that Master KG and Nomcebo Zikode have truly created something special with their song.
- In South Africa: The song’s music video is now officially the most streamed South African music video of all time, by some distance too. At the time of writing, the 10-month-old video has amassed 227 million views and continues to climb.
