A quick-thinking motorist thwarted a hijacking – which was caught on CCTV footage – in Pinetown, Durban
The man was hailed for shooting one of the men who tried to hijack him on Josiah Gumede Road, an intersection said to be a crime hot spot in Pinetown.
In a video shared on Facebook by eThekwini Secure, three alleged hijackers can be seen running towards the man’s bakkie when he stopped at the intersection.
Two men run to the driver’s side while one of them goes to the passenger side. One of the alleged hijackers, who seemed to have been shot by the motorist, is seen falling to the ground then the other two run away in different directions.
The video was flooded with comments from people praising the motorist who survived the attempted hijacking. One person wrote: “This is happening every day at Pinetown intersection next to the railway lines”.
Another wrote: “I’ve been Robbed at that same intersection 3 times but not as quick on the draw as this guy. Only once out of the three got some shots off.. Well done.. Give the man a Bells!!”.
According to the 2019/2020 national crime statistics, there has been a 13,3% increase in car hijacking.
Motorists have also been urged to be more vigilant.
