After the stress and chaos of planning a wedding, honeymoons are the perfect time to relax, spend quality time together with your new spouse, and experience some fun activities together…
While some international destinations are still in lockdown, why not book your romantic honeymoon in Elgin?
Venture less than an hour from Cape Town, and you will be transported into a natural haven where adventure activities await around every corner and food and wine establishments offer up a number of heavenly treats.
Whether you are heading out for the day or plan to take your time and stay a while, here are some of the best things to do in the Elgin valley:
1. Mountain biking
One of the main reasons people head into the Elgin valley is to take advantage of the myriad of mountain biking trails in the surrounding valleys and mountains.
Some of the best trails can be found on the Oak Valley and Paul Cluver wine farms, with these trails featuring in some of the country’s most epic races such as the Cape Epic and Wines 2 Whales.
If mountain biking is your reason for breathing, then I highly recommend that you book in at Trails End Hotel – Africa’s first bike hotel. This hotel is entirely dedicated to mountain bikers with a one site rental spot, wash station, mini pump track, training area and a number of trails easily accessible from right outside the front door.
2. Wine tasting – Toast your new union in style!
The cool climate of the Elgin valley makes this an ideal, and all too often overlooked, destination for wine making.
A number of boutique wineries can be found here, specialising in cool climate varietals such as Chenin Blanc and Pinot Meunier. While you can enjoy wine tasting at any number of farms in the Elgin valley, one of my personal favourites is Charles Fox.
The farm is only ten years old and belongs to two Champagne enthusiasts whose vast selection of Champagne caps collected from their travels around the globe is quite astonishing.
Charles Fox specialises in Cap Classique wines and their complex offerings have to be some of the most delicious in the country!
3. Farm stall hopping
Nothing goes better with a glass of wine than some yummy homemade eats. Thankfully there is a bountiful selection of farm fresh goodies on offer in the Elgin valley.
Visit one or a few of the area’s farm stalls and pick up a selection of fresh veggies, cakes and bakes, sauces and jams and more to enjoy at home. Alternatively grab a hearty pie for on the road or kick up your feet and relax in one of the farm stall’s gardens with a cup of coffee and a family meal.
We recommend the Orchard Farm Stall for their sweet treats, and Peregrine and Houw Hoek Farm Stalls for their amazing pies. You can also linger longer at Peregrine and enjoy a tasting of home-grown apple cider from Everson’s.
While the Elgin valley is home to some of the most majestic, and the most gruelling, hiking and walking trails in the Western Cape, some may be pleased to discover that you can still enjoy the mountain views with much less effort.
The Cape Canopy Tour takes you high up into the Hottentots Holland mountains where you can enjoy an experience quite like any other.
View waterfalls and overlook ravines as you glide along eleven zip lines, enjoying a number of cliff-side platforms and even a hair-raising swing bridge along the way. Its an adventure you will be talking about for years to come and once you’ve felt the thrill of flying, you’ll return to do it again and again!
5. Railway market
While there are a variety of great restaurants and foodie venues in the Elgin valley, the Railway market deserves a mention all on its own as it’s an experience in itself. An old apple warehouse has been converted into a steampunk style station and the building itself is enough to leave you mesmerised.
Marvel at the attention to detail as humungous stoves rise through the building and equally large fans hover overhead. Inside you’ll find a smorgasbord of food options as well as a number of arts and crafts stalls through which to browse. Be sure to take your time and enjoy the live music as you take in the unique atmosphere of the market.
6. Enjoy a beach day
Famous for its airstream trailers, the Old Mac Daddy hotel has become an icon in the Elgin valley. However, did you know that you can enjoy a day on the beach here?
Spend the night at this unique spot and you’ll be given access to a private beach where you can sip on cocktails, go stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, zorbing or even enjoy a spot of fishing. When you are done relaxing on the beach, you can also try your hand at archery or take the kids on a tractor ride.
