“America. What is America’s destiny? What is best for our nation? Our people? What is just? True justice? We have to think about all these things together as a people…”
These are the opening lines of Kanye West’s first presidential campaign video. It was released on Twitter, and has already received over 1.5 million views.
The rapper focussed his message on faith in God, prayer, and the importance of family.
“We will build a stronger country by building stronger families. Families are the building blocks of society, of a nation. By turning to faith, we will be the kind of nation, the kind of people, God intends us to be.”
Can Kanye really run for president of the United States?
When West first announced his intention to run for president in July this year, he had missed a number of deadlines to appear on ballots in certain states. He wanted to enter the race with a party called The Birthday Party. Why? “Because when we win, it’s everybody’s birthday,” explained West.
Towards the end of July, it seemed that the artist had been forced to give up his spot in the race due to the late registration. However, according to a report by ABC News, he is now running as a write-in candidate. “A write-in candidate is someone running for political office — in this instance, the presidency — whose name is not pre-printed on the ballot. This means voters have to add the name of the candidate to their voting paper themselves,” says the report. Read more about the details HERE.
Concern for West’s mental state after first presidential rally
In his first presidential rally held in July this year, the public raised concern for West after he broke down during the rally and admitted that he and Kim Kardashian had considered aborting their first child.
Kanye wept and repeatedly yelled, “I almost killed my daughter” before offering an explanation. This incident led to Kim Kardashian West publicly requesting support for the rapper who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. ““I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this… Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words sometimes do not align with his intentions.”
West also apologised for revealing private family matters to the public. “I would like to apologize to my wife Kim for going public with something that was a private matter. I did not cover her like she has covered me. “To Kim I want to say I know I hurt you. Please forgive me. Thank you for always being there for me. (sic)”
Despite a number of incidents of bizarre behaviour and several Twitter rants throughout the year, West is determined to continue his campaign to become the next president of the United States of America.
