The year was 1994. Prince Charles had finally confessed to cheating on his wife Princess Diana in an interview with documentary filmmaker Jonathan Dimbleby

But whilst Charles claimed he only strayed when his marriage became “irretrievably broken down”, it was rumoured he had done so throughout his 13 year-marriage to Diana, with his long-term love interest and now wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

A year later, Diana gave her bombshell Panorama interview in which she claimed “there were three of us in this marriage,” alluding to Camilla, who just two years earlier had split from her own husband Andrew.

Fast forward to present day and the contents of a secret letter dated back to 1994 written by Charles, following his admission to having an extra-marital affair, has since been leaked, in which he makes some interesting insights into the royal scandal.

In the letter addressed to his former royal maid Marjorie Dawson, the heir to the throne, Charles admits to “living dangerously” during his affair. He also jokes about the interview

The letter, unearthed by her family after she died last year at age 104, reads:  “Dear Marjorie, I was enormously grateful for your very kind letter following that television programme the other day.

“I suspect it was what is called ‘living dangerously’, but it seems difficult to avoid nowadays!

“Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed it and managed to remain fully awake for two and a half hours.”

In another letter to Marjorie following his 2005 wedding to Camilla, reads: “You can have no idea how lucky I am to have my Darling Camilla’.

The collection of letters from Charles to Marjorie, as well as other memorabilia belonging to the royal member of staff will reportedly go on auction next week.

It is expected to fetch over £10,000 (R215 000).
