Tucked away in Woodstock’s creative quarter is the ethereal wonderland you never knew you needed in your life…

Combining a hands-on floral experience with mouth-watering homemade cakes and barista-brewed coffee is the genius new idea from Petals Group, who’ve been in business since 1967!

Born out of the insanity of the COVID-19 economic meltdown, Petals Group looked at what they had in their hands (custom-made props, a warehouse of décor items and their floral design business) and reinvented themselves.

“While the pandemic may have locked us out of hosting large events for a while, it couldn’t lock us out of helping Capetonians unleash their inner florists in our one-of-a-kind space,” says Petals Group founder, Flower Walker.

Since the Flower Café launch in August they have turned their warehouse into the most magical interior you will find in the Cape – and now they invite Capetonians and tourists inside to enjoy it with them!

How does it work?

Flower Café is open from Wednesdays to Fridays from 09:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00, when their friendly floral designers are on hand to assist guests with their unique creations.  Large group bookings and events may be arranged for other days on request.

The way it works is like this: get in touch with Veronica to pre-book your spots for R70 per person (vee@petalsgroup.co.za / 082 321 7371). This fee is then deductible from your floral purchases on the day.

Guests can either do a mini-workshop where they learn about the Victorian Language of Flowers – coincidentally featured in Netflix’s latest blockbuster film, Enola Holmes (starring the charismatic Millie Bobbie Brown and the dashing Henry Cavill) – and how to create their own fragrant bouquet called a Tussie Mussie.

If you’re more of a freestyler, you may skip the workshop and create your own floral creation in your own time and on your own terms. Simply purchase a vase to suit your taste and budget, then fill it stem by stem from the daily florals on offer. (You are also more than welcome to bring your own vase from home.)

Unleash your inner florist

While you’re unleashing your inner florist, you can also feast on a variety of delicious tea-time treats and your hot drink of choice.  From their legendary carrot cake recipe developed by the daughter of two Flower Café’s florists – also one of La Belle’s original patisserie chefs – to savoury quiche, there is bound to be something to tickle your tastebuds!

It’s not surprising that the service is superb – the Petals Group has been throwing corporate parties and luxury wedding celebrations for decades.  You get the feeling that each staff member truly wants you to have a wonderful experience with them.  They even offer their space for children’s birthday parties, bridal showers or corporate events!  If you can dream it, they can do it.

When you visit, a quirky extra is getting a photograph of yourself sitting on the Elton John swing – a swing Petals Group created for the party they put together for Sir Elton John himself!

The bottom line? Do yourself a favour and bring your mom, sisters, cousins, aunties and besties to Flower Café for a few hours of relaxation and reconnecting with your creative spirit. You won’t regret it!  (Yes, men are very welcome, too!)

You can find Flower Café at 184 Sir Lowry Road in Woodstock. Secure parking is available across the street at the Woodstock Quarter.

To book email Veronica at vee@petalsgroup.co.za, text her on 082 321 7371 or call 021 461 8809 during office hours.
