Popular British singer Adele has been dragged over the coals after a picture of her wearing a Bantu knot hairstyle has gone viral
Not only does the pic show off Adele flaunting a bikini (of a Jamaican flag at that) as well as her impressive weight loss, it also sees her wearing a hairstyle indigenous to African – and in particular Zulu culture.
Social media users have criticised the star over the move, citing ‘cultural appropriation’ – a term used in popular culture when one adopts a practise or cultural identity marker, different to their own, without acknowledging it.
Bantu knots have been getting a lot of attention in recent weeks. Beyonce rocked the look during her visual album Black Is King, whilst closer to home, Minnie Dlamini was criticised after calling the style ‘ghetto’.
