“The liquid facelift” – Botox and Dysport are part of the range of ‘injectables’ used by aesthetic doctors to relax wrinkles and revitalise ageing skin…

The low-risk treatment usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes, with results lasting between three and four months at a time.

What exactly is Botox ®?

Botox® is actually a brand name for a product made from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. However, it’s become the word most frequently associated with non-surgical injectable treatments that target wrinkles.

Botulinum Toxin (Botox or Dysport) has been used in the medical field for over 20 years and is approved by the FDA for the use of cosmetic indications. Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxin, meaning it can relax muscle contractions.

How does it work?

Botox® helps to smooth out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by blocking the signals that are sent between the nerves and muscles. This means that the injected muscles are unable to contract, which therefore relaxes the skin and soften wrinkles.

All4Women teamed up with Dr Maureen Allem, the founder and Medical Director of the Renewal Institute to answer all your questions about Botox® that you’ve been too shy to ask.

  • Does it hurt?
  • How many treatments are needed?
  • How much does it cost?
  • Can it help with sagging skin around the mouth and eyes?
  • Does Botox® help to prevent excessive sweating?
  • Can Botox® injections help with migraines?

Does it hurt?

No anaesthetic is needed, but it can be used to make treatment more comfortable for the client. After treatment with Botox®, effects last between 3 to 4 months, but some factors can affect this including the body’s circulation, specific medication, as well as the immune system.

Usually, you will have a mosquito-bite looking area for 20-60 minutes which resolves without a trace. Very occasionally, little red areas at areas of injection appear but resolve within a couple of days, rarely a small bruise can occur.

Your regular skin care regimen can be resumed immediately following a treatment, and makeup may be applied if desired.

How many treatments do I need, and how much does it cost?

The amount of Botulinum Toxin required is determined by several factors such as larger muscle mass (i.e. men) or how healthy or active the muscle is.

Botulinum Toxin takes between 10 to 14 days to “kick in,” for that reason a follow-up appointment is made two weeks after the initial injections to assess the final result and determined whether more units are required.

Can Botox® smooth out wrinkles around my eyes?

For those who would rather steer clear of going under the knife to shave a few years off their appearance, Botox & Dysport work without visible wounding. This is gaining popularity as “The Liquid Facelift.” The Liquid Facelift is a combination of Botox® and Fillers, you won’t get the full effect just using Botox/Dysport

When used for cosmetic reasons, Botox® is injected into the relevant facial muscles that show expression, like the frown lines when we frown, the crow’s feet when we smile, or around the mouth from excessive pursing of the lips.

With ageing, this repetitive motion of the skin starts to show strain, and deep folds and tiny wrinkles begin to develop.

This “injectable facelift” can create a younger look and address these concerns.

What can I do about sagging skin on the sides of my mouth?

For sagging skin on side of the mouth, the doctor might consider a combination of Botox® and filler. The doctor will advise on the cost of this during the consultation.

The consultation is R500 and if the patient has Botox® or filler done during the same consultation, it is deducted from the total of the bill.

Our Botox® is R80 per unit starting with a minimum of 20 units per area and our filler prices are between R3,750 and R4,800 for 1ml.

At what age can women start with Botox®?

Our clinics treat patients from the age of eighteen. Our doctors always ensure that the effect is natural, so you are in good and experienced hands.

Can Botox® help with excessive sweating?

Botulinum Toxin can be used for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) under the arms, palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Can it help with migraines?

Chronic migraines or chronic tension headaches can be successfully treated with Botulinum Toxin.
