According to Crime Stoppers International, South Africans download almost a million pirate movies every month, making them some of the biggest pirates in Africa, and ranking 14th worldwide for illegal downloads. Brazil takes the top spot overall.
Costing the industry up to R300 million every year
This number does not include music, games or books, it just focuses on movies and series titles, according to the SA Federation Against Copyright Theft (Safact). The Cape Argus reported that the total damage from illegal downloads costs the industry up to R300 million every year.
The paper reported that the counterfeit DVD business is often a front for more serious crime, and earns criminals the petty cash they need to carry out abalone poaching and rhino poaching activities as well as illegal gemstone trading.
